The following interview with Shawn Collins, a prominent expert in the affiliate marketing field, must prove instructive towards the viewer. Shawn
has experienced a meteoric rise in the field and now runs his affiliate program management and consulting firm. As this particular job interview is inherently
limited in scope, one is encouraged to read about Shawn’s experiences
in the field and also the advice he dispenses through the books of his, reports, articles, blog, conferences, and weekly radio show. The reader also can meet
Shawn in the Affiliate Summit, a “can’t miss” convention for those thinking about excelling in the competitive world of affiliate marketing.
Q. Shawn, how might you describe the initial experiences of yours with affiliate
advertising?
A. It was again in 1997. I’d a dial-up account on AOL, a 14.4 modem and
a desire to make extra money. At the moment, I didn’t know a little something about
creating sites, etc, marketing. although I went by having a tutorial at AOL on
writing HTML and also picked up the basics. Next, I made a hideous, single
page website about New York City as well as install some Amazon links. I never earned
a cent on that website.
Q. What growing aches did you endure at first? What had been the biggest
obstacles and challenges from that period of time?
A. Back then, there would have been a monopoly on registering domains, and also it cost
$35 a season. At the point in time, that has been a bit prohibitive for me (I didn’t
realize what an excellent investment a short name would be). That has been a trend –
an unwillingness to buy the affiliate marketing efforts of mine. I was heading the free
route with tools, hosting, etc. That undoubtedly delayed the progress of mine.
Q. What was your first “Ah-ha” moment? How did you add the
lesson learned into your online marketing business?
A. The first time I got my reporting via email from Amazon with
info on commission generated. In the past, there was no choice to kibo code member login; Recommended Resource site,
to an interface – just a periodic email with affiliate stats. When I
realized it was serious which I might generate profits in this manner, I was excited as well as motivated. This persuaded me I was wasting my time working in
magazine publishing – it was time for me to end up in a type of work that was stimulating and rewarding.
With my limited online marketing knowledge, I was able to get a job with a start-up in 1997 called Medsite.com, and also I bluffed my way into
running the affiliate marketing program there. I’ve enjoyed my business ever since.
